Juan de la Cosa (circa 1450/1460—1510) es considerado el primer cartógrafo de América. Por recomendación de los reyes de España, traza el primer mapa en el que aparecen todas las tierras conocidas hasta ese momento, incluyendo, por supuesto, las del Nuevo Mundo. Su mapamundi ovalado, hecho con pluma sobre piel—de 1500— perfila en el horizonte las costas verdes del continente americano. La cartografía es el arte de dibujar mapas, los mismos que a su vez indican el rumbo a seguir o para saber en qué lugar estamos parados. Ante la presencia avasalladora de la tecnología (la información satelital, los teléfonos inteligentes, el Google Earth, etcétera), la cartografía redefine sus funciones y alcances. Sin embargo, varios diagnósticos de expertos en ecología que circulan aquí y allá, parecen indicar que el planeta, si no se toman medidas radicales de inmediato, ingresará en una fase apocalíptica irreversible: inundaciones, pandemias, pestes e incendios continentales, por lo que se requerirán nuevas cartografías para remapear el mundo después del desastre. Cuesta trabajo admitirlo, pero siempre, aunque los finales felices en literatura tengan mala prensa (“vivieron felices y comieron perdices”), creemos en ese golpe de buena suerte que pueda revertir la inercia de las catástrofes. Antes de que cualquier cosa suceda, las colaboraciones de este número dan cuenta del lugar en el que viven sus autores, quienes, mediante mapas personales e íntimos, describen el acontecer cotidiano de la vida sobre la tierra. Igualmente, revaloran los lugares reales donde ocurren ficciones paralelas que los reinventan; y escudriñan universos imaginarios sintomáticos con sus reglas propias como Yoknapatawpha, Macondo, Comala, Placeres, Castaños y Santa María, etcétera.

Juan de la Cosa (circa 1450 / 1460—1510) is considered America’s first cartographer. Acting on the royal recommendation of the king and queen of Spain, he traced the first map of all lands known up until that point, including—of course—the New World. His oval 1500 mapamundi, drawn with a feather plume on leather, outlines on the horizon the green shores of the American continent. Cartography is the art of map-making, of showing us both the way we should go and the spot where we are standing. In the overwhelming presence of technology (satellite information, smartphones, Google Earth, etc.), cartography redefines its function and scope. At the same time, a variety of analytical models by experts in ecology appear in circulation here and there, and seem to indicate that if radical measures are not taken immediately, the planet with enter an irreversibly apocalyptic phase (floods, pandemics, plagues, wildfires spanning over continents) – and that a new cartography would be needed, to remap the world after the cataclysm. It is not easy to admit, but despite the lack of prestige of “happily ever after” endings in fiction, we always believe in that stroke of good luck that can reverse the momentum of a looming disaster. Before anything happens, the entries included in this issue give a snapshot of the place which each writer inhabits – personal and intimate maps that outline the daily events of life on earth. Likewise, the collaborating authors reevaluate the real locations reinvented by the parallel fictions that have made them emblematic – places like Yoknapatawpha, Macondo, Comala, Placeres, Castaños and Santa María, which are at the center of symbolic imaginary universes governed by their own rules.
